🔗 Japan's library doesn't consider Switch 2 Game-Key Cards as physical media, won't preserve them

You can't preserve what isn't there.

Japan's national library — which gathers all domestic books, CDs, games, and more — won't be taking in Switch 2 Game-Key Card titles.

This isn't really much of a surprise, as well, you can't preserve what isn't there.

Reporting at VGC states that the library "has chosen not to include Switch 2 Game-Key Cards as part of its collection, because it doesn’t consider them physical media". Fair enough, neither do I.

The whole Game-Key Cards thing stinks, especially from an environmental and preservation point of view. There's been plenty of noise made about the distaste towards this format, with Nintendo themselves even surveying players for their thoughts on the Switch 2 game option. I'm hoping they just slowly go away over time and are seen as the misstep they are (along with code in box nonsense), but I'm not overly hopeful.
