🔗 Razer has two new Thunderbolt 5 accessories in the pipeline

A new Thunderbolt 5 dock, and a new GPU inclosure are coming.

From Razer PR:

Razer [...] today announced the launch of two cutting-edge PC accessories powered by Thunderbolt 5: the Razer Thunderbolt 5 Dock and Razer Core X V2 external graphics enclosure.

And:

The Razer Thunderbolt 5 Dock is engineered to meet the evolving demands of modern workstations and gaming environments. With support for triple 4K displays, ultra-fast data transfer, and integrated storage, the dock consolidates multiple functions into a single, efficient hub.

Also:

The Razer Core X V2 is a next-generation external graphics (eGPU) enclosure engineered to deliver desktop-class performance to Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 5 and to select USB4 gaming laptops and handhelds, and other compatible devices.

The Thunderbolt 5 dock has ports for life:

  • 1 Gb Ethernet (RJ45) Port
  • Thunderbolt 5 – Downstream
  • Thunderbolt 5 – Upstream
  • 250 W Power Port
  • Two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gb/s)
  • One USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gb/s)
  • Microphone/Headphone Combo Port (supports 7.1 surround)
  • UHS-II SD Card Slot
  • Open M.2 Slot (PCIe Gen4x4)

Especially that m.2 slot is intriguing. Unfortunately, for my personal use I'm missing two HDMI ports. I connect my MacBook in clamshell mode to two displays and these are older ones which don't have any USB-C ports. Maybe I'd need an adapter (or a newer screen).

The Razer Core X V2 meanwhile has room for a PCIe x16 GPU that is up to 4 slots wide (although Thunderbolt 5 tops out at PCIe 4.0 x4 speeds). I currently have a RTX 3070 in the predecessor of the Razer Core, which I use in combination with a handheld whenever I need more on-the-go performance (for example when visiting family; yes I am nerdy like that).

But unlike its predecessor, it looks like the Core X V2 does not come with a built-in power supply. This might be both a blessing and a curse, because one of the critique points of the other version is that for more performant GPUs, users had to change the power supply themselves.

The Thunderbolt 5 dock starts at $389,99 and the Core X V2 is at $349,99.
